Ashamed of Swiss vote

Today Swiss voted to ban minarets. I am British by birth, and also have Swiss nationality through naturalisation. I have lived in Switzerland for 27 years, climbed the Matterhorn, roamed through the mountains from one end of the country to the other, and identify with most of the Swiss way of life. My first wife, who died 17 years ago, was Swiss. I have loved this country, but today I must say I am ashamed that my compatriots have voted to ban minarets. I acknowledge the democratic decision. But I exercise my right to say I am totally opposed to it. It is bigoted, intolerant and inhuman. I express solidarity to the many Muslims who contribute to Swiss society through high ethical standards, and I pledge to do what I democratically can to reverse this decision.

Good on you. We need more people like you in Switzerland. See may take on the vote at http://wp.me/puojM-O

The shame was not the vote itself, as that’s democracy, but that 47% of voters didn’t bother, and I would guess most of them were No voters. I’ve only lived in Switzerland 5 years, so can’t yet vote unfortunately – much like most of the Muslims in Switzerland. It’s something I touch on in my book and blog.

Bravo Marcus. I am a Swiss national through marriage and I’ve never been so ashamed of my country as I am now after this unfortunate vote. The argument I loath is when someone says to me succinctly that Christians can’t build churches in Muslim countries so why should we allow minarets in Switzerland. Maybe this reasoning is true in some Muslim countries, but why can’t we Swiss show the way instead of parroting uncivilized gestures of religious intolerance.
